And, and then job without any new job.
I was just thought, no,
it’s no way.
That’s my wife, that’s Tommy not stop something like I think people who start a business and you know, they kind of have the but the buffer where that they’re in a nice comfy job and then when they’re ready and I’ve got enough money, they leave, that’s different.
And I think that that’s not as it’s not as easy to just, you know, quit and then just go all into something.
Yeah.
But I didn’t even start this business because I just had the idea.
So I quit my job without having another job.
So I thought, okay, I’ll get another job maybe work in a year or two whilst, I’m, you know, flushing out this business it and prepping for it.
But I left that and didn’t have a job but I trusted it.
I was like, you know what, worries me the right job will come for you.
You know, you will make it work somehow.
And within I think a day or two, I, you know, I had a job offer, you know, at CNN.
And that’s where I was for just, I think almost a year and a half.
The year contract and got extended for about four, five months after, and that was perfect timing.
Because it allowed me to work side-by-side kind of just, you know, explored my business idea, you know, prepping for it during the Kickstarter, doing everything.
And then, by the time I left, I was thinking that I would have to take up maybe some part-time jobs.
And I thought, oh, this is going to be a fun exciting time because I’ve never done any waitressing or bar stuff or anything like that.
So I thought, okay this would be an opportunity where I could explore those jobs where it doesn’t take too much brain power, you know but it’s fun I can meet new people and it’s not something that I haven’t done before.
Do it three times a week.
and not many people who see that of that bartending and waitressing as that much of a positive opportunity.
Well, but I’m not many people, you have to put us.
You know, you have to look at the bigger picture.
Yeah.
It’s I would have stayed in that job out of fear.
Because when my contract is coming to an end, I was so afraid.
You know, it kicked in, I was like, oh my goodness.
What am I going to do?
Am I going to throw this almost 10 years worth of career that I built up?
What, you know, my product is not the most conventional.
It’s not, you know, it has elements of what people might consider a little bit.
Oh this is, you know, spirituality or, you know, like journaling coloring in.
It’s not you know you have all those limiting beliefs that it’s not going to be taken seriously.
Yeah, I thought oh my God.
They’ll see me in terms of oh, she’s done all this, you know, in her career.
Now I’m just going to do some really random woo, you know, whatever it is.
Yeah, so there was a lot of fear and I was I always applied to stay and and yeah know and then a friend, told me, I was like, because I got stressed out during the application process.
It’s funny how things in life show, you know, there’s so many signs and you just need to look out for it and receive them.
But I was tried, I was applying for the, there was a permanent role going and I thought, listen, just apply for it.
But essentially, it was out of fear, I applied for it.
And then I went into interview and I just got the sense, that same feeling that I had previously of not being seen, not being heard, not being valued.
Dude, you know, and not seeing my worth in this interview and I was like, but still, I was like, oh my God, I have to, you know, I wanted to fight for it.
I wanted to you know, but hold on a minute.
I’ve been with you guys for a year-and-a-half.
Surely could see that, you know, I wanted to fight for it again, you know.
Because that’s that’s the constant battle just fighting
to create.
Yeah, you can’t leap read exactly.
And I once had that situation, you want to prove that you can do it so you do something even against your better judgment.
And
also just, I think me as a black woman.
I’ve always felt like I’ve had to prove.
I had to be active so much my career.
I had to be, you know, like listen, I want to try it.
I want to offer you.
I’m going to do it.
I’m going to learn from you.
Don’t worry.
I’ll do the extra work and that’s how I kind of progressed.
And I see other people who are just like, oh I’m just chilling and I’m like, am I trying too hard?
Is that the problem?
But then if I don’t, then you have oh no, she’s not, you know, she’s not.
Yeah.
And then that’s that.
That’s it, you’ve got this big dude, big debate like you know you you try too hard, you’re pushing yourself but then if you don’t then you look like your slacker and they will say you are lazy and they accuse you of that and then it’s like what do you do?
You’re torn and I do believe that you do you are already at a disadvantage of being in a minority and several different groups.
And so you always have to prove that you are as good as or better than them.
And that’s the problem and and you are consistently fighting this battle with yourself for that for that that That you all good.
And it’s an entirely really difficult.
Battle really is.
So I get it.
No, I had that.
You know, go back to.
Yeah.
So I was trying, I got the sense that I just dread feeling, you know, like, oh my God, they can’t see my.
But yet, I wanted to kind of prove myself and my friend was like, what are you doing?
It’s me, like, did you just tell me about this project?
You are so excited about what are you doing?
And I was like, you know what, you’re right.
And I recognize that the fear kind of, you know.
Yes, again my livelihood, you know, I had a mortgage what, what’s going to happen, blah, but I realized also the excitement of it and I realized my fear was that I didn’t want to really tap into my savings and diminish my savings.
So I didn’t have anything because I thought I’d just leave and start doing it.
And then I found a solution that works for me, I think that is what that I think.
If anything, that’s so important, when you have, when you come across a situation that’s difficult.
Challenging rather, yes, acknowledge it.
Take a top, take some time to, you know, digest it don’t run away from it, the feelings, the emotions, and then the next, you know, after that is just finding a solution that works for you because there’s always in a spectrum of how bad it is, and how good it is.
There’s always a spectrum where you will be comfortable, you know, might not be, might not be the best but you you’ll be okay, you’ll accept it, you’ll be fine.
So I had to find a spectrum where I would be okay because there’s no way I would be like, yeah, I’m gonna leave and have no pay, it’s not realistic.
But let me find somewhere within that linear journey where I would feel comfortable enough to go.
Okay, let’s do this and that was okay I don’t want to tap into my savings too much.
So why don’t I just get a job that is going to be you know but I can’t get a job that’s too stressful because then I will take my attention for my business.
Why don’t I get a job that’s going to be perhaps less stressful.
Bit more fun.
What can I get out of it?
Maybe I can meet some people.
Maybe I can learn something, maybe I can try those things and I never did as you know, young people.
Did, you know it 20s and a teenager’s?
I worked this.
I did that.
And that’s how I saw it, you know.
So in that sense it became something positive as opposed to.
Oh my God I gotta do this and you know and then guess what?
I left and I didn’t even have to do it.
but I didn’t you just say so he describes every person’s kind of mental journey for when they started my own business.
It’s one of the scariest things, right?
You, you have a safety net in a job, you’ve got a salary, no matter what happens.
You’re going to have a salary but you know when you’re doing it by yourself you don’t have that if things go wrong.
What do you do?
And if you’ve got a mortgage you’ve got kids, you’ve got all those things to worry about.
You have dependents, you you are going to fear for not being able to provide for them.
This is the consistent thing I hear when people are trying to start their own business and I’m always trying to inspire people to start their own business because it’s the best thing I’ve ever done and like you say, it’s the best thing you’ve ever done.
And most people do say that, if you truly love what you do, you should do it.
Life is too short.
But again, it’s like don’t start a business because you think it’s a good idea and you think it’s going to make you money, that’s the wrong reason to start a business and you’re not and it’s not all the glory that people think about.
So you have to realize that there’s gonna be a ton of stress a ton of late nights, a ton of hard work, a ton of financial problems and you need to be prepared for all of that.
If you don’t love what you do, you’re not going to be prepared for that.
You’re going to be going.
Why am I doing this?
Because I love what I do and I still wake up and go.
Why am I doing this?
Like you know,
I’m curious because I don’t think we’ve ever spoken about how you came to start your business.
So I’m curious to hear your journey.
I think that’s a story for another day because like that is a long story.
Yeah.
I mean, obviously share it another day, but mine is also crazy.
And you know, I do obviously love what I do.
I think it’s quite clear to anyone who speaks to me, that’s passion there, but I would never be able to do this job if I didn’t have that passion because it is so stressful.
And whilst people see me as the happy energetic like bubbly person, they think.
Oh my God.
She’s as happy all the time.
She’s just like, life must be so easy but I’ve no idea what goes on behind closed doors.
And that’s what I guess this podcast is also all about because I want to speak to people who are willing to tell the truth who are willing to not give the social media answer for, you know, life and put the pictures up of all the brilliant things that happened and the successes.
I want to hear about the tears, I want to hear about the stress, I want to hear about the, you know, turning to a bottle which is not the right thing to do but people have done it because they’re scared and they’re worried and and just you know realize that
everyone’s human.
And this is what we all go through.
But I want to talk about the positive sides of this because I love your journal.
Like I’m a big journal person.
But I love it because to me and I obviously want to hear your opinion to me.
Like I’ve got the journal here.
Not only is it beautiful and great but I love that as a busy person.
I love the fact that you’ve got one page per day.
There’s space to actually do stuff.
There were so many ones who just have a bit of space and I’m like my day is so busy, like give me space.
Like you write what I need to do first off.
That’s I love love, love the coloring.
Oh my God, like I remember the phase ever went through all the coloring, you know, adult coloring is therapeutic, it is an oh, my God music now, the crazy person too, but it’s the fact that it’s so wholesome.
Like you cover everything, you cover the busy person, like busy business owners life.
Like, you know what?
They need to do?
You cover personal relationships, you cover financial you cover like every bit of that wheel of life, which is in here, which you can color, which I also know.
And like, you know, you’ve got travel goals, you’ve got like, you know, morning routines evening routines.
It’s like, you thought of absolutely everything to sort someone’s life at.
And I that’s, that’s how I visualize your journal because I just think it’s so cool.
Like, how did you come to this?
And like yeah, like how are your, what your thoughts are?
I hope you’re proud of it because I think it’s an amazing product, but I want to hear what you think about this tunnel.
Thank you so much.
Oh, thank you.
That that makes me feel so happy.
Yeah, I know, I am super proud super proud, super, super proud.
It took a long while to get here, but I knew I would, you know, just fine-tuning little things and that’s what I’m going to say, you know, don’t wait until it’s perfect.
You will perfect it on the way.
So, you know, now I’m like, oh yes, it’s the sweet spot right now, but me so now I can I can I can build.
But for me, it was again, you know, going through everything I’ve been through going through, kind of just just my challenges and, you know, trying to build a successful career and trying to just be successful in life.
I, I kind of took it to personal development, you know.
How do I do that?
I think it’s just about being curious, you know?
So if I want to be successful in my career, what do I do?
If I want to be successful in life?
What do I do?
And you read you find things.
And I think during my I was twenty-five, twenty-four twenty-five, literally, I call it a quarter life crisis, and did you feel like everything just just wasn’t working for me, you know, like workwise.
I think that’s when I was kind of trying to navigate myself from, you know, you know, like what I really wanted to do where I wanted to go, I had a long-term relationship that just had ended.
My friendships were very shaky you know my relationship with my mom wasn’t great.
You know it just felt like there was a lot going on.
I just hold on a minute, hold on a minute.
It can’t be everyone else.
It must be me.
Yeah.
What is good and a bad thing if you know for me it was a good thing because I said it must be me so I need to take a moment and step back and reflect.
What is it that I’m putting out there.
What is it that?
I because it can’t just be everyone.
The commonality is me, you know.
Nice, honey.
So important like the fact that you were able to self-reflect, can’t do that.
That is something that most people can’t do.
I think it’s so important these days and that’s what and it’s a big thing at the moment self-reflection people are realizing the how important that is and obviously this journal allows you to do it.
So in so many areas, which I think, is what makes it stand out from all its competitors and I just think as all, you know, mental health is a big topic at the moment, you know, very big and I’m really, really pleased that it’s becoming less of a stigma and people are realizing just how serious mental health issues are.
And, you know, everyone’s working from home.
They consider it to be normal and not everyone’s considerate about other people’s working from home status.
Like if you’re sitting in a nice, big town has loads of outdoor space and many rooms and you know, home offices.
Then you know, you’re you’re probably doing okay.
And you’re working from home, life is probably quite comfortable.
But what about if you’re in London and you know, I’m renting in London, I don’t yet own my own place.
That is my 2021 goal, by the way.
But I don’t yet own my own place, and I just have a room.
This is where I was where I work.
This is where I sleep.
This is where I eat, you know, and I lucky, I have a bathroom.
Why is this is where I did showering too and it’s not healthy, like, it’s not if this tiny room is my, uh, my only, you know, four walls, I get to be in, that’s not healthy, and people don’t appreciate that and how that much can take a toll, but because I’m a bit more self aware of it.
I don’t have, you know, the detrimental mental health effects that it could cause, but not everyone is that lucky.
And this is why I then I love this journal now, because it makes you more aware because mental health issues.
So I wanted to ask you about your experience in mental health too.
And you know what it means to you and you know why you’ve obviously put these really important things in your journal.
